About Camp Quality

Camp Quality is a volunteer driven, volunteer run and community funded non-profit, 501 (C) (3) organization that provides free camping experiences and year-round support programs for children with cancer, and their families.  Camp Quality Greater Kansas City's programs are focused to care for the emotional needs of children with cancer and their families.  As they face the “challenging days” and celebrate the good ones, a support network of peers provides tremendous strength and hope.

Camp is held for one-week during the summer, with additional support programs continuing throughout the year such as reunions and family outings.

What we are
We are about making a difference in a child’s life. We are a volunteer driven organization providing year round programs for kids with cancer with a focus on improving the quality of life. Our programs are designed to foster the building of new friendships, emotional strength, and life skills in a stress free environment. These programs are offered at no cost to the families of kids with cancer.

What we are Not
We are not in the camping business … We do not own campgrounds and we do not operate any campgrounds.

How do we do it?
The companion to camper program. Each camper is paired with an adult companion (18 years or older) who spends the entire week at camp by his/her campers side. The companion is the camper’s friend, cheerleader, and mentor even beyond camp. With year-round reunions, special events, and though informal contact, companions, campers, and their families come together to share and support one another.

o The overnight campground is an ideal venue to bring our campers and companions together to share fun and exciting experiences where campers have the opportunity to build relationships, emotional strength, life skills and memories to sustain them in the years ahead.

o Unlike other camping programs, each of our fun activities at camp are carefully selected to ensure that the activity builds life skills, encourages group interaction amongst campers and companions, and/or offers a high impact lasting memory.

o Companions and the Program/Activity Staff at camp work together to encourage children to try new activities and challenges that allow them to leave their “Comfort Zone" in an attempt to build emotional strength and life skills.

Camp Quality was founded in Sydney, Australia in 1983 by Vera Entwistle after she discovered that a camping program for children with cancer did not yet exist in Australia. Entwistle came up with the name Camp Quality after a doctor told her “No one can do anything about the quantity of one’s life, but all of us can do something about the quality.

Today there are Camp Quality locations in 19 countries. In 2003, Camp Quality USA provided 600 cancer diagnosed children with individual overnight camping experiences. In 2001, Optimist International recognized Camp Quality USA as an endorsed organization through their Optimist International Childhood Cancer Campaign.
