CAMP QUALITY USA

I’m excited to share a major milestone for Camp Quality USA – the launch of our first strategic plan since unifying as one organization. This plan was approved by the Camp Quality USA Board of Directors on Monday, August 11, 2025 and marks a pivotal step in shaping our future, bringing everyone together around a shared vision, and charting a bold course for the next three years. It reflects months of collaboration, candid discussions, and a shared commitment to serving more kids with cancer – more equitably and effectively than ever before.
This plan is not the finish line – it’s the foundation for CQUSA’s next era.

Laura Vaughn
CEO Camp Quality USA
This is Camp Quality USA’s first strategic plan since unification – and a milestone in aligning as one organization. For the first time, we’re setting a shared direction across all of CQUSA. A strategic plan doesn’t capture everything we’ll do in the next three years – especially operationally – but it does outline what matters most. This is our blueprint for the work that will move CQUSA forward in bold, meaningful ways.
This plan exists to:
- Focus and align our efforts in one consistent direction
- Clearly articulate our priorities to staff, volunteers, partners, and donors
- Make and enshrine important (and sometimes hard) decisions
- Establish clear success metrics to drive accountability
CQUSA must strengthen its internal capabilities now to enable bold growth later.
We identified 3 critical gaps:
- Structural misalignment – Our systems and structures haven’t kept pace with our unified vision, causing inefficiencies, unclear roles, and missed opportunities for partnership.
- Fundraising limitations – Our current infrastructure, tools, and talent aren’t set up to drive national fundraising growth or increase donor engagement.
- Uneven camper reach and experience – We’re not serving as many kids as we could, and the quality and equity of programming varies too widely.
We’re investing in our programs, people, and infrastructure so we can serve more kids with cancer – more equitably and more effectively – with the financial and operational strength to sustain that impact.
Expand Impact at Summer Camp
- Increase the number of kids served by 12% annually and ensure every camp delivers high-quality, consistent experiences aligned with our 3-pillar outcomes of belonging, exploration, and emotional awareness
Advance Program Equity
- Deliver equitable camp experiences regardless of location by adopting national equity guidelines, including budget standards.
Strengthen Financial Health
- Grow total revenue to $10 million by 2028 through stronger donor retention, national campaign consistency, and deeper engagement.
Build Infrastructure for Scale
- Design and implement a new organizational structure and data system to support growth, clarity, and accountability.
- As part of this plan, we’re aligning our organizational structure so our local camp teams have more time and support to focus on what matters most – creating joyful, safe, and equitable camp experiences for every child we serve and enhancing the Camp Quality mission.
When we execute this plan, here’s where Camp Quality USA will stand by the end of 2028:
- Serving significantly more kids with cancer every year—kids who are better supported and more equitably served
- Funded more sustainably, with a stronger donor base, better retention, and national campaigns running with
consistency - Operating as one cohesive organization, with an aligned structure, common systems, and data that drives smart
decisions - Trusted by partners and stakeholders for our clarity, follow-through, and mission-centered focus
And just as importantly, we’ll be positioned to grow:
- To launch new programs
- To expand geographically
- To deepen our impact beyond summer camps
Develop the Strategic Planning Team
- 11 representatives of the organization, comprised of Board, National Support Team, and Field Leadership (Anita, Anneliese, Beth, Crystal, Kaitlin, Kandi, Karen, Laura, Mark, Pam, Stacie)
Determine the Timeline
- March–July 2025: a mix of in-person and virtual working sessions
- Presented and approved at Board of Directors meeting on Monday, August 11, 2025
Identify strategic plan needs
- Landscape analysis informed a clear strategic diagnosis
- Set direction: defined priorities, goals, and measurable outcomes
- Built initiatives: 12 key projects aligned to 4 strategic goals
- Revised mission statement (under development)
