At 16 years old, Phoenix is wise beyond her years—and her story with Camp Quality is as inspiring as she is. Diagnosed with cancer in 2015, Phoenix began attending Camp when she was just six years old. Now, a decade later, Camp Quality remains one of the most important and joyful parts of her life. According to her mom, “it’s been incredible every single year.”
From the very beginning, Camp felt like home. Phoenix’s mom shares, “I’m always in awe at the events and activities these kids get to have at camp. It’s been Phoenix’s favorite place since her first year.” With a natural love for art and history, Phoenix finds ways to express her creativity and curiosity during themed games, crafts, and immersive camp adventures.
But what truly stands out for Phoenix isn’t just the activities—it’s the people. “Phoenix’s favorite thing about Camp has always been the people,” her mom says. “She looks forward to seeing her friends, companion, and the staff every year.”
These friendships have been especially meaningful. Her mom explains, “When she first started Camp, it gave her the opportunity to see some of her favorite nurses in a new light—in a super fun way outside of the hospital. I feel like this was really helpful for her mental health during treatment, and for forging trust and good relationships with her care team.”
Beyond the medical transformation, Camp gave Phoenix something even more meaningful—true friendship. As her mom shares, “She got to make a lot of new friends who shared her cancer experiences.” These are the friends who just get it—no explanations needed. “They’ve become lifelong friendships for her,” her mom says.
Camp Quality has grown into something much more than a summer program—it’s part of Phoenix’s life, and always will be. “CQ has absolutely become a staple in our lives,” her mom says.
If you asked Phoenix’s mom to describe her daughter in a few words, she’d tell you without hesitation: “Beautiful, creative, and driven.” And if you’ve ever met Phoenix at camp, you’d know—those words couldn’t be more true.
